By now the entire world has adapted the digital ways of living, may it be communication, work, entertainment or education. We all have joined the IT superhighway to get to our different destinations. Particularly education comes with the need for distance learning through online methods and more often than not we may all end up feeling something may not have worked well or the experience of online learning could have been better. To make the journey of online learning successful, we have to follow certain best practices to make it efficient and effective.
A. Charge your device battery well in advance: Power cuts are common in urban and rural areas alike however rural areas may endure more frequent and long lasting power cuts and one of the workarounds may be to charge your devices well in advance so the session doesn’t get abruptly disconnected or even lose unsaved data or work files.
B. Signals: Make sure you are seated in a place where there is good reception of mobile data / wifi signals (make sure you are not too close to the wifi router as it emits high radiation, it’s important to maintain a safe distance from the router and that can be verified in the product manual).
C. Earphone with in-built microphone: An earphone has a great capability to block outside noises in most cases if not at least cut the noise levels heard by the listener. A microphone that is attached to the earphone compliments as a combo device avoiding the need for a separate microphone to be mounted or carried at all times. It also works best compared to the inbuilt device microphone like in a mobile or laptop as it will be located very close to the sound source that is the person’s mouth and the sound gets picked up clearly.
A. Disable notifications: One of the major distractions users commonly face is the endless notifications they get especially on mobile devices and in most cases they turn out not to be useful. Disabling notifications help in concentrating on the task in hand, here online learning and makes the learning experience to be focused, uninterrupted and effective.
B. Block/Close background apps: Mobile and desktop devices slow down if there are multiple background apps running so it’s a good idea to close all of these before starting the online learning session so the RAM is dedicated to this task thereby leveraging speed and performance.
C. Data usage: To avoid surprises, regularly check the data usage so you have sufficient data balance/validity and enjoy a consistent learning process.
D. Sharing large files: Avoid sharing large files directly on apps like whatsapp, email etc, instead always upload these files on storage sites like google drive etc and share only the link so that it not only saves device storage space but also proves to be a faster communication as its only a link that is sent.
E. Browser tabs: We all have the habit of opening multiple browser tabs simultaneously and that may result in device and connectivity slowdown, instead make sure you close all the unwanted tabs and only have the tab that is relevant to online learning session.
A. Lighting: Make sure there is enough and good lighting available where you are seated. Always make sure not to have backlight like a window or any other light source behind you that makes your face darkened by the shadow and makes you poorly visible on the other side of the video call.
B. Noise: Ensure that you are seated in a place that is away from a sound source like a street or television thereby making it easier for the other person in the call to hear you well.
The above pointers if followed effectively make your everyday online learning experience easy as a breeze.
